Winners of the competition to install sculpture on the St. Michael’s Rails to Trails bike path have been announced. Five proposals will take shape on the trail May 1st between Boundary Lane and W. Chew Ave. Local author and retired real estate broker Ann Hymes conceived the idea and sponsored the $500 prizes for each winner. The Commissioners of St. Michaels approved the idea for a one-year trial, with artwork remaining up for six months.
“Submissions were an interesting mix of ideas, color, texture, and fun,” explains Hymes. “The other two judges and I were looking for sculpture that would interest and delight walkers and bikers on our wonderful bike path. “Multiple entries were welcome, and I am thrilled with the enthusiasm and response.”
The winners are: “Cosmic Energy, Earth’s Life Forces,” by Mario Tama, with Leah Bell & Nick Frock; “Seeking Refuge,” by Karen O’Dowd; “Y Recycle?” by the St. Michaels YMCA; “Yarn Bombing” by Parker Herron; and “Fisher King” by Cole Meyerhoff.
The public is invited to come meet the artists and enjoy refreshments at the W. Chew Ave. end of the Art Trail, at the park: Monday, May 1st, at 5:00.
