In a conversation I had today with Sean Smith the Head Coach of the St Michaels wrestling team, he reflected on the SAINTS 2011-2012 season. The last match of the season will be the Maryland State Championships this Friday and Saturday at Cole Field House on the University of Maryland campus in College Park.
Two Wrestlers from the Saints have been invited to the State Finals this weekend. They are Brian Mister with a record of 38/2 and Kyle Pepper sporting a record of 33/6. We wish both Brian and Kyle the best as they represent St Michaels in the biggest match of the season. The St Michaels Wrestling program has only had two State Champions, Jordan Gowe in 2010 and Ray Carpenter in 1984.
The Saints ended this season with a team record of five wins and nine losses. Sean Smith noted that this was the first losing season for the Saints in ten years. One of the reasons for the disappointing season was the lack of experienced wrestlers at the sophomore and junior level. We only had 25 kids turn out for wrestling this year compared to 33 on the squad during our best year, Smith said. We were able to staff a full lineup only once this entire year with experienced wrestlers. Inexperience, Injuries to key wrestlers and losing one or two wrestlers to academic issues caused some insurmountable gaps in the lineup this season. Unfortunately, the Saints inexperience will continue with only one, four year wrestler returning next season. Kevin Parker will return as a senior wrestler next year and will undoubtedly be a candidate for captain on a very young team.
