Santa Comes to Christmas in St. Michaels this December

November 30, 2022 by Christmas in St. Michaels

Santa will be helping Christmas in St. Michaels celebrate its 36th year of weekend festivities with several appearances in St. Michaels during the December 9 -11 slate of events.

The highlight for children and families is Saturday’s Breakfast with Santa, which takes place from 8-10:00 a.m. on Dec. 10 at the waterfront Foxy’s Harbor Grille. Limited $10 tickets are available in advance, with online purchasing available.

Santa is joined by Christmas in St. Michaels Treasurer Linda Seemans, left, and President Pat Martin, right, to help plan his and Mrs. Claus’s appearances in this year’s Dec. 9 – 11 events.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be participating in the Talbot Street Parade, which follows the breakfast and begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Spectators will also see plenty of people dressed as Santa for the Santa Dash as they run in the fun-filled, rain-or-shine Saturday event.

The goal for this year’s events is to raise funds to distribute grants to local beneficiaries. More than 25 family services, education and child development, and community enhancement organizations depend on Christmas in St. Michaels funds to support their programs and activities.

Holiday Traditions Return to St. Michaels on Dec. 11

November 14, 2021 by Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

As part of the annual Christmas in St. Michaels festivities, the Chesapeake Independent Blues and the Fort McHenry Guard will return to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum this December to re-create the early 19th century tradition of firing guns to celebrate the Christmas season. The event is free for CBMM members or with general museum admission.

Hosted by interpretive volunteers from the Fort McHenry Guard and Chesapeake Independent Blues, the program will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11, from noon–12:30pm along CBMM’s Miles River waterfront. As part of the program, volunteers in authentic uniforms of the Maryland Militia during the War of 1812 will demonstrate the loading and firing of reproduction muskets.

“The traditions of celebrating Christmas, and the firing of guns, had been brought to the Americas by Swiss, Scandinavian, and German-speaking immigrants during the 18th and 19th centuries,” said Mark Dubin, a founding member of the Chesapeake Independent Blues. “It is probable that the militia of St. Michaels would have fired the Town’s artillery for notable occasions such as the 4th of July, New Year’s Day, and Christmas, beginning as early as 1814.”

The Chesapeake Independent Blues was formed in 2012 as part of a State of Maryland grant matched by public funds from the Eastern Shore counties of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Talbot, and Queen Anne’s to create a living history representation of the Maryland citizen-soldiers who served during the War of 1812. A member of Maryland’s non-profit Friends of Maryland’s War of 1812 organization, the CIB focuses on public education, and refers to its volunteer members as interpreters, rather than re-enactors.

An Open House at CBMM’s Museum Store invites the public to start their holiday shopping.

The Fort McHenry Guard is a historical organization sponsored by the National Park Service and The Patriots of Fort McHenry. The Guard is composed of specially recruited “Volunteers in Parks” who provide visitors with a touchstone to the past.

In additional to the historical re-enactment, the public is also invited to get in the holiday spirit by stopping by the Museum Store for an Open House between the hours of 10am–7pm. A recent revamp of the Museum Store introduced fresh, mission-related inventory highlighting the best of CBMM and the Chesapeake Bay, and guests are sure to find holiday gifts for everyone on their list. Light refreshments and festive raffle prizes will be provided, as will the chance for existing CBMM members—who receive a 10% Store discount at most levels year-round—to purchase a gift membership for the holidays.

For more information about upcoming events at CBMM, visit cbmm.org or call 410-745-2916. For details on the annual Christmas in St. Michaels celebration, visit christmasinstmichaels.org.

2020 Christmas in St. Michaels Ornament Now Available

October 16, 2020 by Christmas in St. Michaels

Christmas in St. Michaels has announced the introduction of its 17th annual collector’s Christmas ornament, available now in local shops and online.

This year’s ornament features the osprey, whose familiar nests are often seen perched above channel markers, platforms and telephone poles. The piece was adapted from an original drawing by local artist and graphic designer Scott Sullivan.

Known as Pandion haliaetus, and often called the “fish hawk,” they feed almost exclusively on live fish.  The osprey’s whistling or chirping call is as recognizable as is its distinctive flight profile and heavily flapping wingbeats. Watching these magnificent birds from a boat or kayak can provide an especially good vantage point. Many waterfront homeowners happily provide nesting platforms and are rewarded by a summer- long drama as an osprey couple builds its nest and populates it with a growing family.  Nests are distinctive, measuring about a meter in diameter and built from whatever the nesting pair can find — corn stalks, branches and shoreline debris.

Typically the harbingers of spring on the Eastern Shore, the migrating osprey may log more than 160,000 migration miles during its 15-to-20-year lifetime. Ospreys are monogamous, tending to stay with the same partner for life. Once the pair is reunited, they typically use the same nest as in previous years and begin their courtship rituals. Once the nesting pair has built or repaired its nest, egg laying and incubation quickly follow, from mid-April to late May. The young are fed fish and cared for by the parents until late July to early August, at which time the juveniles are able to fly and fish independently of their parents.  It is a grand sight to watch a mother osprey teach her hatchlings to fly from their nest high above the water, with the little ones often falling in, rescued by mom or dad to try again and again.

The Christmas in St. Michaels ornament was first produced in 2004 and a unique image has followed every year since. Previous year’s ornaments are available online at christmasinstmichaels.org.  Ornaments are gold-plated brass and presented in a gift box.  All ornaments are priced at $20.00

The 2020 ornament is available at these local St. Michaels shops:

  • All Pets Veterinary Hospital
  • American Holiday
  • Charisma
  • Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Store
  • Chesapeake Trading Company
  • Pemberton Pharmacy & Gifts
  • Shore United Bank – St. Michaels
  • Michaels Harbour Inn Marina and Spa
  • Michaels Pet Supplies
  • The Christmas Shop
  • The Preppy Redneck
  • Trade Whims – St. Michaels & Easton

These local businesses generously sell our ornament and receive no profit from it.  All proceeds from Christmas in St. Michaels collector’s ornaments support local nonprofit organizations whose work enriches the community. The ornament is also for sale at the St. Michaels Farmer’s Market through October.

Christmas in St. Michaels is held annually on the second weekend in December, although this year the event will be largely virtual. Please visit www.christmasinstmichaels.org to see the many virtual activities and items for sale.  The mission of Christmas in St. Michaels is to provide resources to help local non-profit groups enhance the quality of life for the residents of the Bay Hundred community. In 1987 a group of energetic volunteers recognized the need for day care services in the community. A daycare center was established and, since that time, this annual fund-raising weekend event has raised more than $1,400,000 for local, non-profit organizations. For 33 years, funds raised have benefited local citizens of all ages.

Holiday Tradition Returns to St. Michaels Dec. 14

December 3, 2019 by Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

As part of the annual Christmas in St. Michaels festivities, interpretive volunteers from the Chesapeake Independent Blues and the Fort McHenry Guard will return to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum this December to re-create the early 19th century tradition of firing guns to celebrate the Christmas season.
