This recently archived and scanned Talbot Historical Society H. Robins Hollyday Collection glass plate negative revealed this remarkable c.1933 image of the building of the Emerson C. Harrington Choptank River Bridge from the Dorchester County side! The Choptank River Bridge was constructed starting in 1933 and was dedicated by Pres. Franklin Roosevelt in 1935. Hunter H. Harris says
If you look closely to the left of the bridge there appears to be an arrangement with an ‘overhead’ crane on wheels that probably loaded precast concrete structural components on to barges to be carried out to the bridge then lifted into place by that large floating crane that is visible in this image. I wonder if they dropped any of them in the river?
This wonderful image taken by H. Robins Hollyday was ‘shot’ from an airplane most likely flown by local pilot Malcolm Hathaway. Does anyone know where I might find Malcolm Hathaway’s pilot log books to review? Any suggestions are welcome!
