The photo was taken on the corner of Washington and Dover Streets, c. 1950s or 1960s? What is the little girl on the tricycle dressed as? The origins of Halloween date back to a Celtic festival called Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest approximately 2,000 years ago. The Celts believed it was a time when spirits of the dead roamed the earth. The Celts wore costumes to disguise themselves from the spirits. Later in the 8th century Christians named November 1st All Saints Day to remember the dead and Oct. 31st became All Hallows Eve which was later shortened to Halloween.
