Question: What’s better than one bowl chili? Answer: Six bowls of chili—all of them different!
A free chili-tasting gathering—a fun fundraiser/cookoff—takes place 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, February 3rd at Hair O’ the Dog in Easton. The popular liquor store has teamed up with Talbot Humane to compete and raise money for the shelter. It’s the fourth annual event, and here’s how it works. There are two teams (one, the Talbot Humane team; the other, the Hair O’ the Dog team), with each team responsible for serving up three varieties of chili. (Samples of wines and beers paired with each chili are free.) Votes for the team with the best chili are cast using cash. Guests shout out their favorites by putting dollars in a bucket—each team has a bucket at its table. WCEI Morning Host Matt Spencer is serving as Celebrity Judge. He will keep both teams in line and decide on the winner of the Overall Best Chili trophy.
“In the end,” says Talbot Humane Executive Director Patty Quimby, “the real winners are the animals at the shelter.” Indeed, all proceeds from the cookoff—including a percentage of Hair O’ the Dog sales from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—go to Talbot Humane.
All of the money raised will go into Talbot Humane’s Shiloh Fund, which was created to provide above-and-beyond medical care to incoming animals whose needs are beyond the normal care given to animals brought to the shelter. Shiloh Fund dollars go toward the treatment of heartworm disease disease, dental care, the repair of broken legs, and more.
Kids are welcome at the chili cookoff (“No wine for them!” says Hair O’ the Dog owner Joe Petro).
As a sneak preview, one of the chili-makers is sharing the recipe for the chili she will be serving up at Team Talbot Humane’s table. “After trying a half-dozen vegan chili recipes, I landed on this one,” says Susan Sarubin, a certified canine behavior consultant and trainer. “It’s my favorite because the tomato flavor isn’t drowned out by the seasonings or the heat—there’s still a nice little kick,” she says. www.fullofbeans.us/the-best-vegan-chili-ever.
Come enjoy some chili and camaraderie as you support the animals served by Talbot Humane. (Last year, by the way, the magazine What’s Up? Eastern Shore named Talbot Humane the Best Non-Profit on the Shore.)
