The Tred Avon Players (TAP) presents the comical spoof of the spy thriller movies of the Cold War era, “Red Herring” written by Michael Hollinger opening October 18. “Red Herring” is an ingenious farce centering on the love stories of three couples exasperated by a murder and the uncertainty and fear in 1952. The country was facing the red scare and the threat of the nuclear bomb.
The definition of the term red herring is a misleading piece of information that diverts attention from the primary goal or issue. The title “Red Herring” is a brilliant and witty play on these two words together and separately. The setting of the play is as essential as the characters as the scenes change through Wisconsin, a ship in the South Pacific, a morgue, a fish pier, a boarding house, a confessional, and a government office.
Michael Hollinger is also author of “Incorruptible”, “An Empty Plate in the Cafe du Grand Boeuf”, and “Tiny Island”. “Because of his background as a musician, Hollinger considers his plays compositions: characters are instruments, scenes are movements; tempo, rhythm, and dynamics are critical; and melody and counterpoint are always set in relief by rests–beats, pauses, the spaces in between.” quoted from New Dramatists and Playscripts Inc.
Don’t miss “Red Herring” featuring a not-too-bright Russian spy, mistaken identities, counter agents, farcical plot twists, and the importance of the historical context to the plot. It’s a clever, insightful, and delightful comedy directed by Keith Orgain and performed by the talented cast of Nick Grande, Arlene Levinson, George Ludington, Nicole Millette, Erik Murray, John Norton, Lynn Sanchez, Rob Sanchez, and Anita Tecce. Laughs, mystery and plot twists all bundled together for an evening’s entertainment. The production crew consists of Robyn Mendelsohn, David McCreary, Lawrie Jessup, Pam Hamilton, Alison Lynch, Julie Barnett, Bill Gross, Tom Gross, Robert Lynch, Jay Juppé, Barbara Mann, John Pagenstecher, and John Whitesell.
All performances are at the Oxford Community Center beginning with the Thrifty Thursday Preview at 7pm on October 18th.
