In October the Talbot County Visual Arts Center (TCVAC) will host a fabric art show by the Fiber Arts Bee of the Bayside Quilters of the Eastern Shore, including other members of the guild as well. At “Art Quilts” you will see both small wall art quilts and larger works, using a variety of approaches and techniques that demonstrate the links with traditional quilting and more abstract, modern works. As many as 20-30 Eastern Shore quilt artists will be represented by one or more pieces.
Bayside Quilters is a 200-member guild committed to the creation, study, and sharing of quilts and quilt-making of all kinds, and is open to anyone. The Fiber Arts Bee is a small study group within the larger guild and is comprised of fabric artists who explore their vision by pushing the boundaries of more traditional quilting. These works may involve paint, silk screen, photography, stenciling, embroidery, beading, etc. on fabric with hand or machine stitching. In today’s art world, fiber art is more and more seen as not only a craft, but as a respected art form.
One quilt that will be on display is “Chesapeake Morning”. This 35” x 80” quilt was a joint effort by 8 of the Fiber Arts Bee Group. Quilt Artists Julie Hardy, Bette Troike, Sylvia Snyder, Sandy Bemis, Alice Zalik, Marjorie Pendleton, Phyllis Parker, and Margaret Roberts completed their section using various techniques, and then it was sewn together to portray the various levels of life in our Chesapeake Bay.
The exhibit, at TCVAC’s new gallery at the Easton Biz and Artz Center, 10 S. Hanson St., will open with a reception from 5 to 7 pm Saturday, October 5th. You may also see these incredible quilts during the regular exhibit hours of “The Art Center” from 11 am to 4pm Thursday through Saturday or by appointment. The exhibit will run through Saturday, October 26. For more information about TCVAC, please contact Jackie Pfaff-Pratt, [email protected] or go to www.talbot-arts-center.org. Talbot County Visual Arts Center is a non-profit organization, partly funded by the Talbot County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council.
