The Stroke Support Group celebrated its fifth anniversary on April 5, 2013, with a party at Brookletts Place, the Talbot County Senior Center. On hand for the anniversary celebration were many current group members and a few “alumni,” along with Jessica Fluharty, RN, Neuroscience Specialist for the Primary Stroke Center in Memorial Hospital at Easton, who serves Shore Health System’s liaison to the support group. On behalf of Shore Health, Fluharty accepted an award for the System’s continuing support of the Stroke Survivors Support Group, presented by Ruth Arnouts and Melissa Malcolm, both founding members of the group.
Meeting monthly to offer each other encouragement and share information about their progress, the Stroke Support Group has assisted nearly 100 stroke survivors since its
inception in 2008. The average active membership is 25-30 individuals, often accompanied by spouses or other family members. Speakers addressing the group on topics of relevant to stroke survival have included physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, a physical therapist, acupuncturist, speech therapist, skilled nursing facility staff, a medical insurance advisor, and an in-home caregiver.
The Stroke Survivors Group welcomes new members. For more information, contact Jessica Fluharty, 410-822-1000, ext. 5068, or [email protected]
