Moved into your dream house, only it sports not so dreamy a pool? Or maybe you’ve finally decided to reward yourself and family with a permanent backyard vacation spot. Whatever the case, along with looking through glossy magazines and surfing the net for the latest in design trends, you may want to consider stopping into AQUA Pools and Spas in Easton.
The Spy spoke with AQUA general manager Danny Morris recently on what’s hot, what’s not, and other details you’ll need to consider. Sunledges are quite popular; these are shallow shelves set with chairs and/or chaises, you can have (removable) sleeves embedded for umbrellas. Morris remarked that they’re great for kids, and additional cost is minimal. Another big trend is the vanishing edge, or the infinity pool; the water flows over the edge into a smaller pool and then circulates back. And don’t forget to consider a bubbler fountain – a particularly soothing sound on hot summer days. As for the shape, the majority are still rectangular. Morris said that the majority of his clients want something formal; he also noted that rectangular is a must if you’re pondering over an automatic pool cover.
Pebble finishes, the technology used to “color” the water, are trending toward grays, blues and blacks vs bright white. The surrounds
can be blue stone, natural stone, brick, or pavers; this Spy was quite taken by a pool lined with “Lightstreams Glass Tile” in blue.
If you’re looking to renovate, AQUA does everything from ripping out the old pool and starting anew, to converting from a vinyl to concrete bed. Morris said that the less expensive vinyl was prevalent in years past, indeed AQUA used to install it themselves, but it has not withstood the test of time.
An “average” 18 x 36 foot rectangular pool, takes 24,000 gallons of water. In years past, it was common to empty pools at the end of the season, and then refill in spring. Nowadays, pools are simply winterized and covered. AQUA uses a green sanitation electrolysis process, and has done so for over twenty years. Other energy-efficient options include LED lighting and eco-friendly pumps and heaters.
If you’re still not sure about the design, AQUA has a photo gallery, portfolio book, and 3D design program so you can see the various interior colors and deck types before you commit. The company will even handle obtaining the relevant permits. And as to when you can take that inaugural plunge once you’ve finalized all the details? Morris said most pools take two to three months; once the permits are secured, the hole is dug, plumbing inserted, concrete poured, and decking in place, the concrete shell needs to cure before the pebble finish is added. It’s just the beginning of summer – you could be swimming in September.
