The eighth annual Battle-By-The-Bay wrestling tournament concluded at approximately 6PM on Saturday by awarding the top five wrestlers of each weight category a medal. Three local wrestlers finished at the top of their weight class following two days of non-stop wrestling.
Two wrestlers from the St Michaels Saints took home the honors as well as one Warrior from Easton High School. Brian Mister wrestling in the 145 weight class took home the first place medal for the third consecutive year at the Battle by the Bay. Kyle Pepper representing the 195 weight class also took home a first place medal for the Saints. No surprise to anyone was Easton’s Ben Culver’s first place finish in the 138 weight class for the fourth consecutive year.
Cambridge South Dorchester’s Jacob Muir racked up his 100th win during the tournament and continued his winning streak at the 285 (Heavyweight) class when he managed to beat Nate Hollinger from Easton in the final match to take home the gold.
Presenting the individual awards were the 2010 St Michaels State Champion, Jordan Gowe and Alray Johnson, an Olympic trials finalist and coach of Downingtown Pennsylvania High School. Downingtown has the longest winning streak in Pennsylvania history.
Plaques were also presented to the individual who managed the Fastest Fall (Quickest Pin) which was 7 seconds by Kyle Lewis from Wicomico High School. The Outstanding Lightweight Coaches award was won by Tyler Peck from Southern Anne Arundel. The Outstanding Heavyweight Coaches award was presented to Kyle Snyder from Good Counsel High School.
Trophies were presented to the top 5 teams. St Michaels took fifth place with a score of 296. North Dorchester managed to squeak by St Michaels with a score of 298 for a forth place finish. Finishing in third place was Easton with 369 points and coming in second was Good Counsel with 383. Taking Top Honors in the Team category was Wicomico High School with a total score of 431. It is appropriate to note the St Michaels is the second smallest High School in the State of Maryland.
Special recognition in the form of a gift certificate was presented to Mrs. Dawn Mister, for her endless support of the St Michaels Wrestling Team and the Battle-By-The-Bay Tournament since the first Battle eight years ago.
Tournament Director and St Michaels wrestling Coach Sean Smith, repeatedly thanked all the volunteers that help make this one of the premier wrestling tournaments in Maryland. Special recognition goes out to Jason Smith for his work in assisting his older brother Sean, Holly Smith for her calming influence on Jason and (Papa) Smith for his support in the TEE Shirt sales.
