The 38th Parallel Passes Through the Mid Shore!
On April 18,2013 David and Janet Carle, the authors of “Travelling the 38th Parallel, a Water Line around the World” will visit the Talbot County Free Library for a discussion of their new book. This event will begin at 6:30 pm and conclude around 7:45, “Travelling the 38th Parallel…” will be available for sale at the News Center in Easton.
CBF is pleased to join the Talbot County Free Library as a co-sponsor of this event as part of our continuing effort to educate people about the Bay Restoration efforts occurring under the Chesapeake Clean Water Blueprint – a national model for restoration of waterways now gaining worldwide attention.
On April 18, David and Janet Carle will describe their journey around the globe following the 38th Parallel, the latitudinal line that passes through their home on Mono Lake in the eastern Sierra Nevada. Following this line took them to some incredible places, from the Mississippi River to the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, to Turkey, Greece, the Azores…and the Chesapeake Bay.
While travelling in the Bay area in the fall of 2009 David and Janet visited the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Education Center on Smith Island. While there they spent some time on the water with our education staff discussing the challenges the Bay has faced in past few decades, and ground we have gained since. And because no trip out on the Bay would be complete without doing so, they helped catch some delicious blue crabs! They also visited other environmental groups hard at work in the watershed, from the Friends of the Rappahannock River to the Mattawoman Watershed Society.
“Travelling the 38th Parallel, a Water Line around the World” represents years of hard work exploring the way different places around the globe have been influenced by the water that surrounds them, and how human activities have affected the ecology of these areas. From success stories to the negative impacts of a lack of balance between our actions and the need to preserve the environment we rely on, this book explores the unique relationship we have to the water around us.
Those who attend on April 18 will hear an inspiring story about how people around the world experience and respond to the challenge and responsibility of caring for rivers and streams. Come prepared to learn and also to see what you can do take care of local waterways right here at home.
Please join Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Talbot County Free Library at what promises to be an exciting and illuminating discussion!
