Easton
Maryland STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) Festival
Saturday, November 5, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Celebrate science, technology, engineering, and math with fun, free activities for the entire family. Programs include:
- Maryland Science Center’s Skylab Planetarium. Seasonal Stars of the Mid-Atlantic. Locate seasonal constellations and learn when they can be seen. Locate the moon, stars, and planets in the current night sky. Sponsored by the Friends of the Talbot County Free Library. Tickets (available free at the library the day of the festival) are required to attend one of the day’s five, 50-minute shows.
- A hands-on lesson in carving a log canoe from Matt Engel, Shipwright Educator at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
- A demonstration of solar and wind power from Chesapeake College, using a model wind turbine and small solar cells. Make your own circuits and work with the wind turbine to discover the effects of wind speed, number of blades, and blade angles. Also learn how Chesapeake College is reducing energy use and generating its own electricity on its Wye Mills campus.
- An exhibit of American, British, and European World War II model airplanes, presented by Easton/Newman Field Airport.
- Easton Utilities will demonstrate the stages of the Easton Sustainability Campus located at the Wastewater Treatment Facility, and how it maximizes resource conservation and fiscal responsibility.
- Phillips Wharf Environmental Center Fishmobile. Touch or hold Horseshoe Crabs and Diamondback Terrapins. Learn how an oyster reef is created, what else lives there, and how oysters help the Chesapeake Bay. Explore the watershed, learn properties of water, water cycles, and river names. Discover distributions, migration, and fish adaptations. Sponsored by the Friends of the Talbot County Free Library.
- Displays of current STEM projects at Talbot County Public Schools.
Preserving an Historic Bugeye: the Edna E. Lockwood
Monday, November 7, 6:00 p.m. As part of the week’s STEM Festival, Mike Gorman of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum gives a talk entitled “Old Technologies, New Technologies: A Stewardship Strategy for the Edna E. Lockwood.”
Cuba: The Forbidden Country
Thursday, November 10, 6:30 p.m. Herbert Rogers of the Eddie and Sylvia Brown African American Department of the Enoch Pratt Free Library will discuss aspects of Cuban culture and society in a slide-illustrated presentation. A scholar of Latin American studies, Rogers is particularly interested in the African Diaspora in the Caribbean.
Stitching Time
Monday, November 14, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Bring projects in progress (sewing, knitting, cross-stitch, what-have-you). Limited instruction available for beginners. Newcomers welcome!

Thursday, November 10, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Record and share your memories of life and family with a group of friendly, like-minded people. Participants are invited to bring their lunch. Patrons are asked to pre-register for this program.
