The Waterfowl Festival is pleased to announce sculptor David Turner as the 2016 Featured Artist. Turner, a Festival favorite, has been exhibiting in Easton for more than 25 years and is an acclaimed wildlife artist at the local, regional and national level.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled about this year’s Featured Artist selection,” said Waterfowl Festival President, Albert Pritchett. “He is an admired member of the Festival’s artist community and a true partner in our mission. As a Delmarva native, he has a complete understanding of the Eastern Shore culture, landscape and wildlife we celebrate and conserve.”
“The study and practice of sculpting has always been a primary focus in my life. My artistic goal is to capture the spirit and essence of my subject, whether the subject is of a figure or an animal. Growing up on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, where wildlife and sea creatures are both diverse and plentiful, has instilled in me a deep appreciation of and connection to nature. This passion for nature is the driving force behind my sculpture and efforts in conservation,” said Turner.
Turner was born, raised and now resides on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, where his life-long study of wildlife began. He has a degree in Biology from the College of William & Mary. Since 1983, David and his father, William, own and manage Turner Sculpture, which serves as their studio, bronze foundry and gallery. Turner has created more than 250 bronzes featured in their Gallery, museums and private homes, as well as 60 large public commissioned sculptures including works for the National Zoo and DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, DC; Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina; and Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland, CO. Locally, Turner has sculpture pieces at the Tidewater Inn in Easton, Chesapeake Bay Hyatt in Cambridge, Salisbury University, the Ward Museum and throughout Ocean City. David is a signature member of the Society of Animal Artists and the National Sculpture Society.
As Featured Artist, Turner will create a signature sculpture exclusively for the 46th Annual Waterfowl Festival, scheduled for November 11-13, 2016 in historic Easton, Maryland. Festival patrons should expect something new and exciting in this year’s featured piece, which will emphasize the interconnections of a healthy ecosystem. It will also show how a work of art can represent the shared vision and mission to conserve the wildlife and habitats which it inspires. Images and more details about this year’s Featured Artwork will be shared in late spring.
“I am honored to have been selected as the Featured Artist for this prestigious and iconic wildlife art show. As an artist and a naturalist, I am also excited about creating a special sculpture to debut at the 2016 Waterfowl Festival,” said Turner.
