On June 17, 2015, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md. received a donation of live oysters from Talbot watermen Guy and Austin Spurry of St. Michaels, Md, for oyster demonstrations at the museum’s Watermen’s Wharf exhibition.
The oysters had been planted on leased bottom about a year ago in Fishing Bay, off Elliott’s Island, with the shells donated by local watermen, and the spat provided by the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science’s Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge, Md. The oysters will be used to share the history of oyster harvesting and restoration along the Chesapeake Bay with the museum’s 70,000+ annual guests.
The Talbot County Watermen’s Association is bringing the 6th Annual Watermen’s Appreciation Day to CBMM on Sunday, August 9, featuring a crab feast, boat docking contest, live music, celebrity appearances, family activities, and more. For details, visit www.cbmm.org.
