WHCP (91.7 FM) has just come on as a full-service NPR Member Station for the Mid-Shore with Morning Edition and All Things Considered, and 80% of its schedule devoted to being a “Music Discovery Station.” The station offers a diverse lineup of musical styles – Big Band, Neo-Soul, Blues, Indie Music, Jazz, Folk, Classic Country, and deep tracks from the Boomer Tunes era. In addition, the station offers Mid-Shore news updates on Mid-Shore Mid-Day which are provided by partners at the Talbot and Cambridge Spy, The Star Democrat, and a growing number of community journalists who are interviewing the most interesting people about the most interesting events and happenings coming up. Additionally, every day the WHCP Community Calendar is updated and presented about events throughout the Mid-Shore region along with 20-20 Marine Weather which offers up-to-date forecasts twice each hour. To support all of these public radio offerings, WHCP is holding its Membership Drive through November 11.
“A generous anonymous local donor has made a matching gift of $10,000 so that membership support is automatically doubled until we reach the $10,000 level,” states Mike Starling, founder, President & GM of WHCP.
“We are excited our new signal on 91.7 reaches roughly 75,000 people on the Mid-Shore (Talbot, Dorchester, and portions of Caroline, plus over 100,000 more in Wicomico and Southern Maryland). We are now touting signal coverage, but more importantly the program upgrades as a grassroots community station carrying NPR’s most popular programs too.”
During this, our very first Fall Membership drive, WHCP is proud to be among a select group of 17 NPR Member Stations that can offer the NPR+ podcast bundle of 16 podcasts as a thank-you gift to those joining or renewing their membership of at least $96 annually ($8/month). Additionally, Premier Movie Theaters in Cambridge and Easton have partnered with WHCP and the station is making two passes available to any current members (new, returning, or sustaining) at the $60 family membership level and above. Passes can be picked up at WHCP’s Cambridge Studio.
“New and renewing members are critically important to our program plans for the year ahead.
Individual annual memberships start at just $35, and you can become a sustaining monthly member for less than $7 a month, at whcp.org/donate” Starling states.
In addition to its regular programming, WHCP also operates a free public service with the Mid-Shore Reader, a round-the-clock radio reading service for those who cannot read the printed word on their own. Fresh daily readings of books, newspapers, and magazines, including the Star Democrat and Dorchester Banner are read each week, as well as the monthly Attractions, Shore Monthly, and the Tidewater Times magazines are read by local volunteer readers on our secondary audio channel.
“If you or someone you know suffers from vision loss, or who otherwise cannot see, hold, or comprehend the printed word, this service is available free of charge. Just contact the station at [email protected] to learn more or volunteer to be a reader on the Mid-Shore Reader,” Starling adds.
There are four ways to listen to WHCP Radio – on the air at 91.7 FM, via the WHCP app (in the Apple store, coming to Google Play), online at whcp.org, or simply ask Alexa to “launch WHCP Radio” (this loads the interruption-free stream) – once you’ve launched the Alexa Radio skill, just ask Alexa to “play” or “start” WHCP Radio thereafter.

Carol Meredith says
Where I live, I didn’t get any NPR stations in my car. So I was very excited when WHCP started carrying Morning Edition and All Things Considered. I became a sustaining member immediately. But WHCP has turned out to be a lot more than I expected. I enjoy the music they play, the interviews on educated issues and news of local events. So I now keep my car radio tuned to 91.7 most of the time.
