Competition for the annual $5,000 Hannah Prize for creative thinking on environmental issues was announced this week at the awards assembly at St. Michaels High School. The award will be given in April to the student who best answers the question, “If you had $5,000, how would you contribute to environmental sustainability, innovation, or climate study?”
The prize was established by St. Michaels resident Ann Hymes in 2013, and each year the submissions have increased. “This is not a scholarship,” explained Hymes. “The prize money is to be spent on social enterprise, on action. Dream a little, build something, start a business, but show me how you would contribute in a positive way to the environment.”
Last year the panel of three judges awarded the prize to senior Julia Jester, who created a Monarch butterfly garden of native plants at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and gave materials to the school library on Monarch migration and loss of habitat.
Submissions from current SMHS students only may be made in the form of a letter not to exceed 1,000 words — due March 18th — and sent to Ann Hymes, PO Box 367, St. Michaels, MD 21663 or [email protected]
