Maurice E. “Mike” Newnam, III of Easton was recently recognized by Coats Masonic Lodge of Easton at a luncheon and pinning ceremony for his 60 years of service with the Lodge. Newnam served as Worshipful Master of the Coats Lodge in Easton in 1971.
Eric Steward of Easton, current Worshipful Master at Coats Masonic Lodge, commented, “It was a privilege to recognize the contribution Mike has made to our Lodge and the community. His dedication to community service has made Easton and the surrounding area a better place for all of us.”
Coats Masonic Lodge is just one of several organizations recognizing Newnam’s 60-year service this year. In 1957, after returning to Easton following his service in the Marine Corps, Newnam joined other organizations where he held leadership positions including the Elks Club, The Easton Volunteer Fire Department, The Miller Lodge and the American Legion. He is the only person to have ever been president five times for the Easton Volunteer Fire Department.
Newnam’s public service coincided with serving the community as a licensed funeral director for more than 50 years. The family’s funeral home has been a part of the community for over 100 years, starting in 1897 in Oxford, MD.
His daughter Michelle Lowrey, commented at the luncheon, “Dad’s heart (and my Mom’s as well!) has always been about serving others. It’s how my brother and I were raised and most definitely why we also love serving others.”
