What is art? What is Baltimore? What is artNOWbaltimore?
A friend dejectedly asked me years ago why he was so obsessed with writing a novel in a world that is filled with great writing.
Aren’t there enough novels already? Don’t we have enough paintings to enjoy? We certainly won’t have time to see and appreciate all that has previously been produced.
The answer is that every generation sees the world in a new way, one that often leaves us bewildered. But that is what art does: stimulate us to fresh and unexpected understandings.
artNowbaltimore is an adventure into what young artists are producing in Baltimore. Next year the Kohl Gallery at Washington College will do the same for Washington, DC, and the year after, Philadelphia. These exhibitions will be a look at what younger artists are saying to us.
That fellow who questioned his writing actually did finish his book. Whew!
The Kohl Gallery is located inside the Gibson Center for the Arts on the Washington College campus, 300 Washington Avenue, Chestertown, Md., 21620. The gallery is open Wednesday and Thursday 1 to 5 p.m., Friday noon to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. (Closed Monday and Tuesday.)
