April 28th at 7:30 PM, in the concert hall of Easton Church of God, the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra under Julien Benichou will present compositions by three romantic composers. The Sibelius Violin Concerto in D Minor which, “towers on the summit in the instrument’s literature,” with those of Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. From its beautiful first note, through the adagio–considered Sibelius’ most moving passage–to the finale, ending in syncopated brilliance, it has added depth to the tradition. Borodin’s “In the Steppes of Central Asia,” a beguiling, exotic musical tableau whose tunes appear in the Broadway musical “Kismet” and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 “Reformation” commemorating the Lutheranism to which his family had converted to escape growing anti-semitism are also on the program.
The audience will be privileged to hear Arnaud Sussmann, a distinguished violinist, who “is creating the buzz of a star on the ascent” according to critic Rob Hubbard, in this highly personal concerto by Sibelius. His tone has been described as a “rare combination of sweet and smooth…a thing of awe-inspiring beauty with spellbinding phrasing” and compared to that of Heifetz.
Winner of the 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant he is a thrilling young musician capturing the attention of classical critics and audiences around the world. He has appeared with orchestras in Israel, Germany, France, and all over the U.S. This 2015-2016 season he is playing at least seven concertos from the violin repertoire with different orchestras including the Sibelius with our own MSO.
Born in Strasbourg, France and now based in New York City, Arnaud Sussmann trained at the Conservatoire de Paris and Juilliard with Boris Garlitsky and Itzhak Perlman. Winner of several international competitions, he was named a Starling Fellow in 2006, an honor which allowed him to be Mr.Perlman’s teaching assistant for two years. His recordings include albums on Deutsche Grammophon’s DG Concert Series, Naxos, Albany Records and CMS Studio Recordings labels. He is a member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Chamber with which he tours.
