Jude Hegarty – Personal Reflections on the “Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society”
Jude Hegarty of Easton will share her personal memories and family stories from the “Paradise of Guernsey”. Anyone who enjoyed the book “Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows will enjoy Jude Hegarty’s presentation. She describes it as a conversation with pictures of then and now, reflecting on a nine year old girl’s delight on her first visit in 1949 to the tiny Isle of Guernesy a part of the Channel Islands, that the Germans occupied during World War II. From that first visit, she would return to the island for six weeks every year for ten more years. Jude says “On reading the book, memories came flooding back to me about the history and geography of the island, the flowers, and reading Sherlock Holmes on the beach with my family from Birmingham, England.” She will touch on other books relating to Guernsey, including Victor Hugo’s “Toilers of the Sea”, a current detective duo, and others. A reading list of titles is available from the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library.
Jude Hegarty is a retired Physician who has now become a Book Club Groupie. Emigrating with her husband from England in 1967, they have lived and worked on the Eastern Shore for twenty odd years. With children and grandchildren all born in the USA, they now enjoy the Eastern Shore Life on land, water- and above (they fly a small plane). On her first visit to Guernsey she stayed with a friend of her grandmother.
