The Eastern Shore Regional Library, along with Wicomico Public Library, Talbot County Free Library, and Salisbury University, is pleased to announce that Bob Mankoff, Cartoon Editor of The New Yorker, will be speaking in two locations on September 26.
Salisbury University – Perdue Hall – Bennett Family Auditorium
1:00 PM – Presentation, followed by book signing
Avalon Theatre – Easton
7:00 PM – Presentation, followed by book signing
The programs will be followed by autographing sessions, with books for sale at each event. The programs are free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Free tickets for the Avalon program can be picked up at the theatre, or at public libraries in Talbot, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Kent, and Dorchester counties. Ticket holders will receive priority seating.
In his hilarious presentations, Mankoff uses cartoons to explore the audience members’ potential for greater creativity. Audiences will learn how to develop their creativity and natural talents, as well as how to find their own particular voice and message. They will also get an insider’s look at the craft of cartooning itself – what a cartoon is (and what it is not) and what makes a good cartoon work. Mankoff also explores how humor as a form of creativity is related to other fields like science that deal with ideas, how the cognitive techniques used in creating humor can be directly applied to other fields, and research on the ways that humor reduces stress and generates optimism by altering mood.
For information about the Salisbury University event, please contact Scott Mahler at the Wicomico Public Library – 410-748-3612 Ext. 138. For information about the Easton event at the Avalon Theatre, please contact Sabine Simonson at the Talbot Country Free Library – 410-822-1626.
