Amber Rubarth, a pop-singer songwriter on the verge of breaking big, comes to NightCat in Easton Wednesday May 16. Rubarth’s latest album features a duet with superstar Jason Mraz and Colbie Calliat collaborator Jason Reeves.
Rubarth won the Grand Prize in this year’s New Song Mountain Stage Contest for her song “Letter From My Lonelier Self,” giving her the great opportunity to record her new unreleased album with a musical hero of hers, Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, Norah Jones, Cold War Kids). Her quirky and endearingly candid songwriting has attracted enthusiasm from NPR’s All Songs Considered, The Huffington Post, BBC Radio, a glowing feature in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, and a Sun Studio Session airing nationwide on PBS.
Amber grew up with her father who owned five CDs, the best of which was The Bodyguard Soundtrack. She knew she loved music, but her exposure was limited. At seventeen, she moved to Carson City, NV and became a chainsaw sculptor. She did this seven days a week with a waitressing job at night for four years, until one night her mentor shared that the most important thing he had learned was to follow your number one passion, because that is the only way you will be truly great and serve your purpose in the world. It struck a chord, and the next week she returned her chainsaw and bought a guitar. Curious and motivated, she began writing and performing at open mics and coffee shops. She posted her songs to MySpace, where they caught on quickly and she was named one of the Top 100 Independent Artists with over 1.5 million plays. She began touring independently throughout the US, Europe and Japan, and through word of mouth alone many concerts began selling out.
The new album produced by Jacquire King will be released in late 2011. Amber is also composing for films, most recently writing and performing music with Paul Brill for the Sundance Film Festival winner “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.” She is also one half of Brooklyn’s buzz band The Paper Raincoat, an iTunes Indie Spotlight feature.
