Kim Coble, VP of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, issued this statement today following a press conference by the Honorable Benjamin J. Cardin (D-MD), the Honorable Thomas Carper (D-DE) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 Administrator Shawn Garvin concerning farm conservation programs:
“We thank Senator Cardin, Senator Carper and other friends of farmers for understanding the importance of farm conservation programs. Many farmers of the Eastern Shore and throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed are willing to do their part, but federal money provides a significant portion of the resources for these conservation efforts.
We are making progress, farm by farm, town by town, county by county, cleaning up the Chesapeake. But it takes a nation to help save a national treasure. The federal government must stay involved, and Congress needs to ensure that conservation funding in the Farm Bill remains.”
