The annual Joy of Reading event to benefit Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers will feature two well-known authors with ties to both the White House and the Eastern Shore. On December 8, David Eisenhower and Julie Nixon Eisenhower will discuss their book, Going Home to Glory: A Memoir of Life with Dwight D. Eisenhower 1961-1969, at the Avalon Theatre at 7:30 p.m. David is the grandson of President Eisenhower and the son of the military historian John S. D. Eisenhower, who lives in Trappe with his wife, Joanne T. Eisenhower.
Going Home to Glory recounts family stories and includes diaries and letters from the days after President and Mrs. Eisenhower left the White House to retire on their farm in Pennsylvania to his death in 1969. David and Julie Eisenhower describe the retired general and former president’s efforts to counsel Presidents Kennedy and Johnson on Vietnam as well as to advise his own family members. The book is full of anecdotes and observations about Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower in retirement.
David Eisenhower is a professor and public policy fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of several books. His book, Eisenhower: at War, 1943-1945, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history. Julie Nixon Eisenhower, the daughter of President Richard Nixon, is a public speaker on such topics as Life in the White House, Women in Politics and the Presidency, and the author of several books, including Pat Nixon: The Untold Story.
All proceeds from the Joy of Reading event go directly to the tuition assistance fund of Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers (CACC), whose mission is to provide quality, accessible childcare to children and their families in a nurturing, diverse, safe and enriching environment. CACC provides a variety of programs to over 450 children in five sites throughout Talbot County. CACC offers an invaluable service to many working families who count on the quality of the programs and the tuition assistance program.
A reception for the speakers will be held at Scossa Restaurant at 6:00 p.m., followed by their presentation at 7:30 p.m. at the Avalon Theatre.
