Elf, the classic yacht built in 1888, lifted its mast this week, preparing for the season. A crowd gathered to watch as Pete Mullaly of Eastern Shore Flagpoles lifted the fully rigged, 70 ft. mast in place with his crane.
In the shadows of Sultana, visiting from Chestertown, Elf is setting up for the second annual Elf Classic, scheduled for Saturday, May 19th.
A project of the Classic Yacht Restoration Guild (CYRG), Elf spends the season between the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels and the Annapolis Sailing Hall of Fame. Saturday’s race will be the second annual.
So far, 18 different classic yachts have registered for the day long event. Classic boat lovers won’t want to miss this race.
The race begins in the Annapolis harbor on Saturday, May 19th at 8:00 am. The race is created in the style of the 1880s, and features a nautical version of a “Le Mans start”.
All 18 captains will row to their vessels in Annapolis harbor from the Eastport Yacht Club in a race to be the first to raise anchors, sails and get underway.
The race across the Chesapeake Bay to St. Michaels should take some 5 – 6 hours, depending on wind.
The Captains will finish the race by anchoring off the Museum and rowing to shore to sign the race log at the Bandstand on the Maritime Museum grounds.
