The Emerson Café June Series on Civil Liberties and the Bill of Rights led by Dr. John E Finn, continues this Wednesday, June 27, with the topic, “Cruel and Unusual? The Death Penalty.”
Finn, Professor of Government at Wesleyan University for over 20 years and an internationally recognized expert on constitutional law and political violence, will give a talk each Wednesday night in June followed by open discussion.
Dr. Finn has given testimony before the House Judiciary Committee and his lecture circuit has included Bolivia, Canada, Chile, England, France, Italy and Spain. He is published widely in the fields of constitutional theory and interpretation. His books include: Constitutions in Crisis: Political Violence and the Rule of Law and he co-authored American Constitutional Law: Essays, Cases and Comparative Notes.
The recent issues discussed at the Emerson Café have opened up questions that consider the relationship between self and society, rights and relationships and have explored the meaning and definition of life itself and will now expand the issue of life to the profound issue of the death penalty.
Emerson Café, named after the famous Unitarian philosopher, is a series of informal gatherings held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Easton every Wednesday evening from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and is free and open to the public.
Presentations such as talks, films and slide shows on topics that matter, are followed by lively discussions and offer an opportunity for intellectual and spiritual enrichment and growth while relaxing with a cup of tea or coffee.
