Wendy Sue Marker, 47, of Worton was arrested today for embezzlement of nearly $200,000 from Washington College between 2007 and 2012, according to a statement from the Kent County Bureau of Investigations.
A Kent County grand jury handed down a 21-count indictment against the former account specialist for allegedly embezzling money through the college’s dining services.
Accounting discrepancies were discovered during a routine internal audit of sales in April. After an internal investigation, information was turned over to Detective Howard Eveland of the Chestertown Police Department, who is assigned to KBI.
Eveland was assisted during his six-month investigation by a certified public accountant who identified discrepancies from 2007 through 2012.
The charges:
- 1 Count – Theft Scheme $100,000.00 Plus
- 1 Count – Theft Scheme $10,000.00 to Under $100,000.00
- 6 Counts – Theft $1,000.00 to Under $10,000.00
- 6 Counts – Theft $500.00 Plus Value
- 3 Counts – Theft Scheme $500.00 Plus
- 4 Counts – Theft Less $500.00 Value
Marker was put on administrative leave at the end of April after 12 years of employment.
She turned herself in this morning at the Chestertown Police Department without incident and is being held at the Kent County Detention Center–pending an arraignment in Kent County Circuit Court, which could happen as early as today.
The college would not discuss the charges but said they appreciated the efforts of local investigators.
“The College appreciates the diligent and professional efforts of local law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting this case, and we will continue to cooperate fully with the Bureau of Investigation and the State’s Attorney’s office as they pursue the case.”
The Kent County Bureau of Investigations is a combined investigative unit consisting of the Maryland State Police, the Chestertown Police Department and the Rock Hall Police Department.
