The Academy Art Museum will kick off the weekend with a free Gallery Walk Celebration on Friday, November 4 at 5:30 p.m. The event marks the conclusion to the Museum’s ARTober event and will highlight the Museum’s instructors work along with the work created by participants of the month long ARTober celebration.  Artwork created by instructors and students during ARTober will be on display and available for sale.

The weekend will also feature “The Myth Makers in Maryland: The Mighty Merganser,” sculpture on the Museum’s front lawn. Artists Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein (aka the Myth Makers) built one of their iconic sapling sculptures on the Museum’s grounds from saplings cut from local woods on the Eastern Shore. The 16-foot high bird sculpture, made from natural materials with the help of volunteers, will be based on the Hooded Merganser, a bird which is common in Maryland and representative of the independent thinking and bravery of Eastern Shore native Frederick Douglass. Although monumental in scale, the ephemeral works of the Myth Makers are temporary in nature, meaning to last three to five years.

After viewing the sculpture, guests can attend the Museum’s lecture, “Meet the Myth Makers,” by  Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein, aka Myth Makers, at 6 p.m. on Friday night. The artists will share entertaining tales about the Myth Makers’ itinerant lives as international sculptors and their new artwork, “The Mighty Merganser.” The cost is $20 for Museum members and $25 for Non-members. To register, visit academyartmuseum.org or call 410-822-2787.

Based in Boston, the Myth Makers have worked in Peru, Switzerland, Canada and China and have shown their monumental sculptures the “Avian Avatars,” on Broadway in New York, NY; Muskegon, MI; New Orleans, and in many museums in New England. The exhibition is sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council, Talbot County Arts Council, the Star-Democrat, Katherine and David Allen, Maurits Van Wagenberg, Willow Construction and Atlantic Security.

The installation of the Mighty Merganser sculpture is being webcast live at hdcam.us.
