If there was any evidence that the game of golf was an endangered species, particularly with young people, it certainly wasn’t showing up last week when the Talbot Country Club once again hosted the top international golf competition for junior players for last week.
The TCC hosted another successful American Junior Golf Association Open Tournament, with the help of the Frana Family, from July 13 to the 16th, which featured ninety-six of the best junior golfers from around the world.
Following three 18-hole rounds, the Men’s Winner was Kyle Vance of Audubon, PA with a tournament score of 207. The Ladies’ Winner was Shannon Brooks of Vienna, Virginia, also with a tournament score of 207. Easton’s own Peter Knade tied for second place with a tournament score of 209. Knade also posted the tournament’s lowest 18-hole score of 65 during the final round. In addition to Knade, seven other local junior golfers participated in the event.
“Talbot Country Club was proud to host the AJGA again this year. Junior golf is the future of our sport, and we feel strongly about supporting these young players as they persue their dreams of playing golf at the college level and beyond.” said Karl Knade, TCC President. “We are extremely proud of all of the participants, especially those from our own community. We are especially grateful to our sponsors and volunteers who made it all possible.”
The Tournament was supported by more than 75 volunteers, in-kind donations from business partners, and financial contributions by more than 25 sponsors. Due to a strong fundraising effort, TCC raised enough money to cover the tournament costs and also give a $4,000 donation to the First Tee of Baltimore’s Eastern Shore Affiliate that was established in Easton last year. The First Tee is an international youth development organization that introduces the game of golf and its inherent values of integrity, perseverance and respect to young people.
“The contribution to the First Tee Program was the perfect conclusion to a wonderful week celebrating Junior Golf. The TCC community is committed to the next generation of the sport and the life lessons it teaches.”
