At a time of year when many people are making resolutions to take action or create change in their lives, Habitat for Humanity Choptank is hosting two special opportunities to welcome new volunteers into its home building program. New Volunteer Build Days are planned for Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Easton construction site and for Saturday, February 23, 2013 in Cambridge. The work day will begin at 9am with an orientation program that includes a tour of the job site and tool trailer, and important information for offering volunteers a safe and productive experience. Volunteers 18 and older of all skills levels are welcomed including novices. Youth ages 16-17 must have written consent from a legal guardian in advance in order to participate.
“A Habitat home building site is a special place,” says Habitat Choptank executive director Nancy Andrew. Most of the labor for a Habitat built home is provided by volunteers working alongside the future home buyers. “People of different backgrounds come together in a common purpose,” says Andrew. “They help one another and learn new skills. Nail by nail, board by board, they build not just a house that is affordable for a hardworking low-income family but a home.”
Since 1992, Habitat Choptank has made home ownership possible for 57 families to date and currently partners with six local families. These families are offered a “hand up” out of poverty housing. After completing “sweat equity” hours and pre-homeownership classes, these families will purchase homes that they helped construct and assume responsibility for repaying an interest-free Habitat mortgage.
