From 10am–4pm Saturday & Sunday, Oct. 19 & 20, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is inviting guests to be a part of history by helping shipwrights buildblocks for the new Maryland Dove. Space is limited, and advanced registration is required.
These handmade blocks, which will be historically accurate thanks to information provided to CBMM by the Vasa Museum in Sweden, are integral to a ship’s rigging, and will be used throughout the new Maryland Dove’s lifetime to raise and lower sails. The cost for this two-day workshop, which will be held in CBMM’s Workshop Annex, is $100, with a 20% discount for CBMM members. For more and to register, visit cbmm.org/pullandhaul.
Built in a shipyard near Cambridge, Md., in 1978, Maryland Dove is owned by the state of Maryland and operated and maintained by the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission. The ship serves as a representation of the vessel that accompanied the first European colonists to what is now Maryland in 1634. From now through 2021, CBMM’s working Shipyard is constructing the ship’s successor in full public view. CBMM’s Apprentice for a Day Shipyard Programs take place year-round, offering demonstrations, workshops, intensives with visiting master craftsmen, on-the-water experiences, and customized programming. Programs take place on weekends and select weekdays, and include a variety of programs for every interest and age. To find one that’s right for you, visit cbmm.org/shipyardprograms.
