Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity Choptank’s Women Build House are hosting a holiday open house. On Sunday, December 4, 2016, community members are invited to “Deck the Walls” and help support this life changing project. The house at 59 Pleasant Alley in Easton will be open between 1-5pm for guests to tour the home and purchase wreaths and cookies among other holiday-themed items. For a truly one of a kind gift, guests can ‘buy’ or sponsor parts of the Women Build Home such as a light fixture or appliance in honor of a family member, friend, their business or church. Guests will enjoy festive music, holiday treats and apple cider throughout the event.
While Habitat Choptank has a busy build schedule with eight homes currently in progress between Cambridge, Hurlock and Easton, the Women Build House is unique. Women Build is a program of Habitat for Humanity that empowers and engages women in learning construction skills, building homes and positively impacting their community. For the Pleasant Alley house, Habitat Choptank’s goal is a home built and funded by women. This is the nonprofit’s second such project; the first Women Build House was completed in 1998.
“Every part that goes into building this home is important and every one of those pieces has a price,” says Phyllis Rambo, chair of the Women Build Committee. The committee committed to raising $96,000 to fund the total construction costs for the Pleasant Alley house. Close to 75% of those funds have been raised so far. “Deck the Walls is a chance for friends new and old to drop in, tour the home as it’s nearing completion, and be part of the joy of home ownership for another hardworking home buyer in our community. We’re grateful to have our fellow volunteers Elaine Bednarz and Susan Armstrong putting these festivities together.”
The Women Build House will be sold to an income-qualifying home buyer who has met Habitat Choptank’s program requirement for sweat equity, education classes, savings and debt elimination. Habitat home buyers are working people who cannot qualify for conventional financing but who earn enough to assume the responsibilities of home ownership when provided with right-size mortgages. Homes are sold for the cost to complete and with no profit to Habitat. Each house must serve as the buyer’s residence during the life of the mortgage.
The December 4th Deck the Walls holiday open house event is free and open to the public. For more information about Habitat Choptank’s Women Build House, visit www.HabitatChoptank.org or call 410-476-3204.
