The Howard University Concert Band, conducted by Kelvin Washington, will play a benefit concert on Sunday, March 6th at 4:00 pm at the Easton, MD High School Auditorium. Proceeds from the event will support the Family and Friends of Asbury & Greene Chappel, Inc., a historic African American cemetery in Bozman, MD.
The Howard University Concert Band is a premiere performing ensemble in the University’s Department of Music, and is one of the top collegiate symphonic bands in the country. The 39 member Concert Band sustains a rigorous performance schedule throughout the academic year and performs a diversified repertoire of works. The Band has performed in cities throughout North America.
Conductor Kelvin Washington has been teaching music since the mid-1980s, and is in his twentieth year as Conductor of the Howard University Concert Band, and is also Associate Director of Bands for the University. A professional instrumentalist, Mr. Washington has toured extensively within the US, Canada, Poland, England and Scotland.
The event beneficiary, the Family and Friends of Asbury and Greene Chappel, Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded to restore a small, historic African American cemetery in the woods of Bozman, MD from abandonment and neglect to a dignified place of rest. The all-volunteer group has undertaken a campaign to raise just under $30,000 to restore the cemetery, add a fence and signage. The group welcomes volunteers and supporters.
