Maps have always told stories. What’s relatively new is making Story Maps online in a geographic information system (GIS). Cathy sees computer mapping as a portal to geography and to understanding issues in relation to features on the earth and aspects of human activities. GIS has a role in education, helping students visualize aspects of a problem, define needed data, and suggest solutions. Workshop participants will do hands-on activities in an online GIS. Bring your laptop, or tell the librarian you would like to borrow one. Registration is required. You can register by calling the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library at (410) 745-5877.
Cathy spent most of her career in commercial banking. Living in various cities and vacationing in various settings afforded her opportunities to experience landscapes, feeding a latent appetite for a sense of place. Geography became even more fun with the academic study of the many patterns of the earth’s physical features and of humans accommodating or reshaping them to their needs and wants. Cathy has given other programs at the Talbot County Free Library including a pictorial review of Alaska’s geography and a look at Ukraine through historical maps. She has studied geography and has a special interest in geographic education. All library programs are free and open to the public. Information is available at www.tcfl.org.
