Letter to Editor: What “Little Guys” are Protected by QAC Big Box Referendum?

October 11, 2012 by Spy Desk

I read your October 3rd article about Queen Anne’s County’s Big Box referendum with interest and want to make the following comments:

I consider Jay Falstad a friend, but differ from his philosophy, which could be summed up as: “I hate all growth unless it’s an agricultural crop”.

He believes “big retail stores squeeze out the little guy”. Where are the little guys? Queen Anne’s County has very few businesses that a Walmart could squeeze out.
Most Queen Anne’s County stores that might be impacted are large National Chains – Rite Aid, Walgreens, Safeway, Food Lion – no local ownership to be seen.
Mr. Cassell – also a friend – may know Walmart’s marketing plan – (I surely don’t). In many areas of the Country the claim has been made that Walmarts kill small
business, but numerous studies show that’s not true.

Speaking of not true, Cassell’s assertion that Kmart is 65,000 sq. ft. shows he hasn’t checked his facts. County Records show the Kmart store is 94,841 sq. ft. 46%
larger than the 65,000 sq. ft. limit that will, hopefully, be permanently removed. If we don’t grow, our economy stagnates – just as has happened in the last few
years. I believe it’s time to change and encourage all voters to vote “YES” for Question B, after voting “YES” for Question A.
