James Dissette has been named publisher and managing editor of the Talbot Spy, the primary source for news, arts and culture in Talbot County with over 25,000 readers since it started in June of 2011.
“It has taken us a long time to find the right person to take over the Talbot Spy,” said Dave Wheelan, president of Spy Publications. “We’ve had some wonderful help from some very gifted writers and editors like Dick Cooper to get the Talbot Spy started, but it was more difficult than I imagined to find the right fit for the community and our unique approach to hyper local news. With Jim’s long ties with Talbot County as a writer, editor, book designer, poet and journalist, it really seems like a lovely bit of luck he’s willing to give this a go.”
Dissette comes to the Talbot Spy with long history in the field of community newspapers having founded publications in Oregon, Michigan and on the Eastern Shore, including the Eastern Shore Milestone. He is a graduate of Choate School and Washington College, where he won the Sophie Kerr Award for Creative Writing and has published several books of poetry and most recently published ‘Fierce Blessings’ in 2008.
“When I published Milestone in Easton a few years ago I recognized how extraordinary Talbot County was in terms of the arts and its cultural legacy,” said Dissette. “The Talbot Spy can showcase these qualities in a way that is both informative but also just plain fun.”
As the book designer for Chester River Press, his publication Heart of Darkness won the prestigious Carl Hertzog Award for Design in 2010. His most recent accomplishments include writing narrative scripts about the life of Walter P.Chrysler for the Chrysler Group LLC’s web site and designing and publishing a book for the Pulitzer poet, Franz Wright.
