Maryland’s Four Centuries Talk at CBMM Nov. 4

On Sunday, Nov. 4 from 2-4 pm, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is hosting a Maryland’s Four Centuries Project seminar featuring Maryland Dove Captain Will Gates presenting research and development for a new replica of Maryland’s first ship. The seminar is one of four in a series hosted around the State, and is free and open to the public, with limited seating available.

The program begins with Historic St. Mary’s City Director of Research Dr. Henry Miller revealing the daunting problems facing Maryland’s first settlers.This background has been uncovered in more than 50 years of archaeological and historical research at St. Mary’s, one of the foremost 17th century archaeological sites in the nation.

Other seminars include “The First Americans and England’s Potomac Frontier, 1607-1676,” held in Frederick on Oct. 28; “The English are Forced to Create a New Society in Maryland and Attempt a Bold Vision,” in Annapolis on Nov. 3; and “How did Slavery Begin and end in Maryland?” in Baltimore on Nov. 17.

The Maryland’s Four Centuries Project is an umbrella organization created to promote Maryland’s rich history, using many important upcoming anniversaries leading to the State’s 400th birthday in 2034. The project links historically-based institutions statewide and hosts programs exploring key events in Maryland’s 400 years.

The Maryland’s Four Centuries Project is generously supported by The George Thomas Fund at the Ark and Dove Society, the Friends of the Maryland State Archives and the Historic St. Mary’s City Foundation. Former President of the Maryland Historical Society and former Executive Director of Historic St. Mary’s City Burt Kummerow is the Founding Director of Maryland’s Four Centuries Project.
