The Chesapeake’s favorite bivalve may be the star of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s October 31 OysterFest, but the music line-up, a new Oyster Shooter bar, Halloween festivities, and the return of Fordham Brewing Company’s Rosie Parks Oyster Stout will provide some of this year’s highlights.
Slated to bring contemporary covers and roots-rocks originals to OysterFest is the Easton-based group Mule Train. Mule Train is known to bring the sounds of Wilco and the Avett Brothers to life. They have appeared at sold-out performances at the Avalon Theatre, among numerous other venues. Mule Train plays from the historic Tolchester Beach Bandstand beginning at 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Across the Miles River boardwalk along Fogg’s Cove, festival-goers will enjoy the tropical rock and “barefoot-guitar” pop sounds of the Kent Island-based trio Key Lime Pie. The trio will be performing live from the lower decks of the Steamboat Building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New to the festival will be an Oyster Shooter bar, generously sponsored by Chesapeake Landing of St. Michaels, Md., and George’s Mixes of Berlin, Md. Also served during the event will be Fordham Brewing Co.’s Rosie Parks Oyster Stout, along with Bloody Mary’s, hot spiced apple cider, Rum Rosie’s, and more.
Other event sponsors include Pepsi Bottling Ventures, Kelly Distributors, Hambleton Inn Bed & Breakfast, Easton Eye Care, Tidewater Vacations, and Hair O’ the Dog Wine & Spirits.
With this year’s OysterFest on Halloween, trick-or-treating will take place among the festival’s vendors, with a judged costume contest for best children’s, adult and maritime-themed costumes. Costume awards will be announced at 3p.m. at the Tolchester Beach Bandstand.
OysterFest admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and students with ID, and $6 for children between the ages of six and 17. Admission is free for CBMM members and children five years of age or younger. Performances, along with exhibit entry and campus activities are included in the admission prices, with food, beverages and boat rides available at an additional cost. Tickets can be picked up in advance at the museum’s welcome center or store, and will be available at the gate the date of the event.
For safety reasons, non-service dogs are prohibited on museum grounds during festivals. Credit cards will be accepted at the door for admission, with festival-goers encouraged to bring cash for use inside the gates. Free parking will be at St. Michaels’ schools, with free shuttle service running through 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.cbmm.org/oysterfest or call 410-745-2916.
