Local artist Katie Cassidy is exhibiting her pastel paintings and those of her students at the historic Old Brick Inn, 401 S. Talbot Street, St. Michaels, now through April 8, 2012. The exhibit is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information please call 410-745-3323, or visit oldbrickinn.com.
This exhibit features Cassidy’s work and selections of her student art from her Fall 2011 pastel classes at the Academy Art Museum. Those included are: Judy Bittorf, Marion Davis, Patsy Dautle, Donna Finley, Mary Jane French, Joan Hart, Corrie James, Laura Kapolchok, Joan McGarry, Jo Merrill, Sara Murphy, Jan Perdue, Elinor Peterson, Sharon Price, Anne Pilert, Don Saballus, Polly Tonsetic, and Arlene Zachmann.
Last fall, Cassidy exhibited her pastels at the Art Academy Museum. This show was a resounding commercial and artistic success. Although Cassidy is versed in a variety of disciplines, she is best known for her luminous and colorful pastels. In addition to a distinguished career in art, she has been teaching for seven years in various media at the Academy Art Museum.
Pastel painting is two hundred year old medium, and works in this medium by Edgar Degas and Mary Cassatt, still command top prices in the art world. Pastel techniques have been evolving, and some of the works in this exhibit will feature an underpainting of oil and watercolor washes, a new method that adds beauty to the pastels. The exhibit will include a variety of subject matter, all rendered by artists encouraged by Cassidy to develop their own style. She emphasizes the importance of developing basics such as drawing skills, and strives to create an environment where expression in style, technique, and subject matter is the goal.
