Ophiuroidea located at 609 S. Talbot St. in St Michaels, Maryland will host the 2nd Annual Eastern Shore Sea Glass Festival to be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 11am – 5pm.
The Eastern Shore Sea Glass Festival is pleased to have special guest, Richard LaMotte, author of Pure Sea Glass, and noted sea glass expert. Richard will be on hand to sign his book and will be available for sea glass discussions from 12-4pm. So, be sure to bring your favorite shards to show off or learn about your pieces with Richard and fellow beachcombers. The Pure Sea Glass collection is a wonderful addition to any sea glass enthusiast’s library and is an incredible reference, with elegant images by photographer Celia Pearson, who’s photos represent some of the best sea glass ever collected, along with samples of the classical glassware that is often its source.
The Eastern Shore Sea Glass Festival will showcase over 15 artisans who have been inspired by the frosted shards to create one-of-a-kind jewelry, home décor and art. The festival will also have wine tastings, featuring Sea Glass Wine Company from Napa, California, hosted by Tilghman Island County Store. The Sea Glass Wine will be available for purchase during the festival. The festival will also feature local area musicians, including St Michaels local, Kelsey Abbott and Little Bird from Anne Arundel County.
Shella Kirchner and Kim Hannon, owners of Ophiuroidea, are excited to share the history of sea glass in the Chesapeake Bay region, as well as the local artisans that are inspired by it. It seems that the sea glass collecting trend has been gaining momentum recently, from articles in local publications to the countless number of sea glass on-line forums.
If you’ve spent countless hours combing the bay or the ocean for your bounty, then you know how wonderful it is to finally find a piece of cobalt blue or maybe even red or yellow, some of the rarest of all colors. Each color represents a place in time and purpose, and each piece is unique and special. Sea glass is a treasure from the past and for many is a time of solitude, where the only care in the world during those beachcombing trips is searching for the frosted treasures at their feet.
If you haven’t been lured to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay by sea glass yet, perhaps a visit to the Eastern Shore Sea Glass Festival will tempt you. Sea glass collecting will hook you once you start.
The festival is an indoor/outdoor event and free to attend. See you November 3rd!
