The Talbot Historical Society will host the second talk in the Ruth Starr Rose Easton speaker series, on Saturday, June 11 at 2 p.m. in the James Neall House Galleries, 29 S. Washington Street in Easton. Sharing the podium will be Pete Lesher and Barbara Paca. Paca will begin by talking about Hope House and its grounds, an historic Talbot County property and home to Ruth Starr Rose and her family. Lesher will follow with some of the more water-related aspects of Rose’s life, from the yacht her father built on the grounds and her own sailing experience to her sailing-related artwork.
Pete Lesher is the chief curator for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, where he has served on the staff since 1991. In addition to overseeing museum exhibits, programs and the restoration boat yard, he is responsible for the museum’s collections, ranging from floating watercraft to sailmaker’s artifacts photographs, manuscripts and oral history archives.
Barbara Paca, art historian and landscape architect, is a highly recognized academic and professional. Working with the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, in Baltimore, she was the guest curator for the exhibition, Ruth Starr Rose: Revelations of African American Life in Maryland and the World, now on display in the Waterfowl Building.
In addition to the talk, guests can visit the Society’s exhibit featuring Rose’s art from their collection and a self-portrait of the artist, on loan from a private collection. Also on display are personal papers and memorabilia, recent gifts to the Society by the artist’s granddaughter, Brenda Rose.
The speaker series compliments the exhibition, Ruth Starr Rose: Revelations of African American Life in Maryland and the World, featuring founding families of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Open every day, 11-4 through June 19, in the Waterfowl Building, 40 S. Harrison Street, the exhibition includes video interviews of many of the descendants.
Sponsored by Dock Street Foundation, there is no cost to the public for the Ruth Starr Rose Easton programs. For more information about the speaker series or the exhibition, call Joan Levy, 410-245-5195 or visit www.RuthStarrRoseEaston.com.
