The Oxford Community Center is delighted to announce the return of a summer favorite, “The Summer Art Room.”
This year, the OCC will be offering the popular art program for two one-week sessions: from July 28 to August 1st and an additional week from August 4 to August 8. The program invites students entering grades 1st through 8th to participate in a morning program from 9:30am to 11:30am. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of art projects that will be featured in an ART SHOW at the end of each week-long program.
The cost for each week is $135 per student and includes everything from art supplies to healthy gluten-free snacks and a journal during break times. Students will also be given a kit of art supplies to take home. Professional instructors, Theresa Schram and Georgina Bliss will lead the program.
Theresa Schram is an Easton-based artist who has been creating contemporary oil and other media works for more than twenty years. Her pieces have been featured from Colorado to Maryland and are displayed in galleries all along the east coast. Her strength as a colorist is clearly evident in her subjects: bright lemons, vibrant crabs or vegetables that jump off the canvas. A Salisbury graduate, Theresa participates regularly with different art communities: Friday Morning Artists of Easton, The Academy Art Museum in Easton and Talbot County Working Artists. “All I want to do is paint,” Theresa explains, “I love working a canvas so much that I enjoy imparting my enthusiasm to my students.” Theresa teaches art at Kent School for grades K though 8th.
Georgina Bliss teaches French at Kent, a 12 year old before and after school enrichment program that develops children’s awareness for global studies using French and the Francophone culture, humanities, and language as a backdrop. Art projects play a large role fostering kids’ curiosity through creating. Georgina is a graduate of the University of Vermont where she studied French and Studio Art. She also studied in Paris at the Atelier de Passy and taught Design I for NYU en France. Her work mostly stays at home but has been featured in Chestertown and in New York City. Georgina has been a youth leader since 1998. She is also the Director of the Chestertown Dancing Society, an 80 year old etiquette and ball room dancing program for youth.
Theresa and Georgina shared a classroom for 9 years at Kent School in Chestertown (the Art Room) and have long wanted to collaborate to bring more art to children. They are both seasoned teachers with more than 25 years of experience between them.
Last year, “The Summer Art Room” featured over 100 projects created by very enthusiastic children from across Talbot County. These projects ranged from facial proportions to embroidery anglais to painted fabric pillows. Children were encouraged to try new and exciting techniques and medium. The result was a beautiful and creative collection of work which was viewed by fifty attendees at the ART SHOW.
For registration information, please contact the Oxford Community Center at 410-226-5904, or email [email protected]. Class size is limited to enhance the experience, so we encourage families to enroll their children in this unique opportunity as early as possible.
