No doubt the most interesting part of the Monday night’s meeting of the Easton Town Council was a report by town planner Lynn Thomas on zoning changes required by Maryland’s new laws permitting the farming of medical marijuana, including redefining cannabis as an agricultural crop. As a result of the state permitting limited agricultural development of the plant, with an expected fifteen farms throughout Maryland to be approved for the initial rollout, counties and municipalities are having to revise local regulations to comply with the new laws. .
In this excerpt from Monday’s meeting, town council members remark on the challenges that come with the new state program, some concerns related to implementation, including possible dispensaries in town, and how medical marijuana may impact the region’s battle against illegal drug use.
