After sailing with more than 1,000 students from Caroline, Dorchester, and Queen Anne’s counties in the month of April, the schooner SULTANA set out from her home port of Chestertown May 7, en route to St. Michaels and Annapolis. Over the next two weeks SULTANA is scheduled to sail with 500+ students from schools in Talbot and Anne Arundel counties.
This is SULTANA’s tenth year sailing with the Talbot County Public schools. During her port visit to St. Michaels (May 7-14), she will sail with every seventh-grade student from Easton and St. Michaels middle schools. SULTANA’s programs in St. Michaels are being hosted by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and funded in part through a grant from the Miles River Yacht Club Foundation. Those interested in boarding and touring SULTANA may do so during an open-house for visitors to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Tuesday, May 10 from 2:30-5:00pm. SULTANA will also be visible from the dockside or sailing on the Miles River during her stay at the museum.
On May 14, SULTANA will make her way to Annapolis where she will be hosted by the National Sailing Hall of Fame. During her visit to Annapolis (May 14-20), SULTANA will sail with seven regional schools, including St. Andrews Episcopal Day School, The Key School, Redeemer Christian School, and the Glenelg County School. SULTANA will also be partnering with the National Sailing Hall of Fame to provide programs for local students.
SULTANA is scheduled to make the return trip from Annapolis to her home port of Chestertown on Saturday, May 20. During this trip, a film team from the U.S. Navy will accompany the crew to shoot video for an upcoming film on the history of the U.S. Naval Observatory. Sharp-eyed observers can expect to see SULTANA under full sail (weather permitting) in the vicinity of Rock Hall, Maryland, shortly after noon on May 20.
