Clara Rankin, Esquire, Appointed to UM Chester River Health Foundation Board

Chester River Health Foundation (CRHF) recently appointed Chestertown resident Clara A. Rankin, Esq., to its Board of Directors for a three-year term. Chester River Health Foundation raises funds to enhance excellence in health care at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown.

Rankin, a retired attorney and teacher, has lived part-time in the Chestertown area with her husband and children since 1999. They became full-time residents in 2021.

“I am an advocate for our community, for the people in it and for quality treatment for all. As a retired litigator, parent, court-appointed guardian and disabled person, I have wide-ranging exposure to medical health systems, which will benefit my work with the Foundation,” said Rankin. “I am honored to bring my world-view and small-town pride to the Foundation, and to assist in its most worthy goals and services.”

“Clara has a wealth of knowledge in both law and health care,” said Richard Barker, chair, CRHF. “We are grateful that she is sharing her time and talents for the benefit of community health care.”

Choptank Community Health System Awarded Joint Commission Accreditation

Choptank Community Health System has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for primary care medical home, ambulatory health care, and behavioral health care and human services accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a healthcare organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

A medical home is a partnership approach between patients, clinicians, medical staff, and families in providing comprehensive primary care. A medical home extends beyond clinical practice to include specialty care, educational services, family support, and more.

This year also marks the first time Choptank Health’s behavioral health services were part of the Joint Commission’s accreditation process. Choptank Health began providing behavioral health services in 2020, with services offered to Choptank Health’s medical and dental patients.

Choptank Health recently underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review, with a team of Joint Commission reviewers evaluating compliance with primary care medical home, ambulatory health care, and behavioral health care standards.

The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts and providers, measurement experts, and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help healthcare organizations measure, assess, and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.

Thattil Joins UM Shore Medical Group-Cardiology

University of Maryland Shore Medical Group – Cardiology recently welcomed Sheeba Thattil, DNP, CRNP, FNP-C, PCCN as a new provider at the practice.

Thattil has more than 20 years of experience in clinical and education settings, including cardiac and medical surgical units, and intensive care units. Most recently, Thattil spent more than 15 years as a registered nurse in the cardiac telemetry unit at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Md.and prior was a nurse at several hospitals in India, providing care in intensive care units, pediatric inpatient departments and cardiac units.

Thattil received her Doctor of Nursing Practice with a specialty in Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Mysore in Karnataka, India. She is certified in Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and as a Progressive Care Certified Nurse, and is affiliated with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.

Choptank Health Announces New Women’s Health Provider

Choptank Community Health System recently welcomed women’s health practitioner Becky Kroeger, DNP, CNM of Easton, Md. to its medical practices.

Kroeger is offering prenatal care and women’s health services at Choptank Health’s Easton Health Center and Fassett Magee Center in Cambridge. She will also be expanding access to women’s health services at Choptank Health Centers located in Caroline and Kent counties.

Services include well-women exams for cervical cancer and breast cancer screenings, gyn/pelvic exams, STI screenings, and contraceptive counseling with IUD and Nexplanon placement.

Kroeger’s experience includes working as a Certified Nurse Midwife providing antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, gynecology, birth control, well-women care, and post-menopausal care. She has served on the adjunct clinical faculty of Salisbury University, where she worked advising and evaluating students in clinical settings.

She graduated from Frontier Nursing University with a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and a Master of Science in Nursing degree, specializing in the field of Nurse Midwifery. Her academics earned her membership in the Frontier Nursing University Honor Society.

Kroeger additionally holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Phoenix University and graduated from the Chesapeake College MGW Nursing Program with an Associate Degree in Nursing.

“Shore to Shore” Health Screenings Event Attracts Watermen, Marine Industry Workers

“Shore to Shore: Free Health Screenings for Marine Industry Workers” attracted strong participation from watermen, boat builders and other marine industry employees from the Kent County region.

The March 16th event at the American Legion in Rock Hall was a collaborative effort of University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown’s Rural Health Care Transformation and Community Outreach teams, Choptank Community Health Services, the Kent County Health Department and the Rock Hall Lions Club. Multiple health screenings (blood pressure, hearing, skin cancer and diabetes) were offered and health education materials and resources were provided.

“The Shore to Shore event was a great success. We are thrilled to have provided free health screenings to 41 watermen and marine industry workers,” said Lara Wilson, Director of Rural Health Care Transformation for UM Shore Regional Health. “I was warmed to hear the great feedback from several participants about how much this event meant to them– the fact that health care professionals would come out to Rock Hall to make sure they could access these important health care screenings close to home and work.”

Screenings were made possible by a health disparities grant from the Kent County Health Department, and were provided by Choptank Community Health System providers and members of Shore Community Outreach Team (formerly the Mobile Wellness Team). Lions Club members provided information about obtaining eyeglasses, and the Kent County Health Department supplied health information materials.

“We are so grateful to these community partners who collaborated with us to make this unique event possible,” said Wilson. “The strong turnout and enthusiasm of the local marine industry and watermen community makes this a great example of effective rural health care delivery – meeting people where they are to improve their access to health care services and identify possible issues that can be addressed before they become so serious that emergency care or hospitalization is required.”

Talbot Hospice Memorial Walk Returns to Oxford Day

The Talbot Hospice Memorial Walk will return to Oxford this Spring as part of the annual Oxford Day tradition on Saturday, April 22nd, at 1:00pm.

“We are so excited that the Memorial Walk is returning to Oxford Day,” said Mia Cranford, Director of Development. “The entire community is invited to join us to celebrate the lasting memories of their loved ones while raising funds to ensure that our programs and services are readily available to everyone in Talbot County.”

Participants may register as individuals or as part of a team, and everyone will have the option of launching their own crowd-funding campaign to reach their fundraising goals for Talbot Hospice.

The Talbot Hospice Memorial Walk will return to Oxford this Spring as part of the annual Oxford Day tradition on Saturday, April 22nd, at 1:00pm.

In addition to the group walk in Oxford, a virtual walk will also be available. Originally introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the virtual walk has continued by popular demand to allow out-of-town family and friends to participate. It also provides another way to enjoy the walk for those who would prefer solitude or their favorite reflecting space.

Check-in for the in-person walk will begin at 12:30pm. Participants are encouraged to park at the Oxford Community Center and then walk or ride the shuttle to Bachelor’sPoint for the start of the walk, which will begin promptly at 1:00pm with opening ceremonies and the beloved dove release.

Participants may either walk with the group from Bachelor’s point back to the Oxford Community Center, or continue on to enjoy the Oxford Community Park before returning to the Community Center for music, food and celebration.

Choptank Health Expands Into Primary Care in Easton

Choptank Community Health System’s Easton Pediatrics office is now the Easton Health Center, with expanded medical services available for children, adults, and families.

Medical services include primary healthcare, women’s health/prenatal, pediatrics, behavioral health, chronic care management, care navigation, onsite laboratory services, and more.

Choptank Health’s Easton office now extends into the entire office space at 522 Cynwood Drive to accommodate more primary health care services for adults and children in Easton. A March 29th ribbon cutting is planned, with brief remarks and light refreshments served from 4 to 6 p.m.

“Choptank Health is always exploring opportunities where we can expand our services and support healthy communities,” said Choptank Health CEO Sara Rich. “This expansion helps to address Talbot County’s need for providers in primary care, women’s and prenatal health, pediatric, and mental health, and aligns with our mission of providing access to health care for all.”

Talbot Goes Purple Student Clubs Debut ‘Science of Substances’ Projects

Talbot Goes Purple student clubs are debuting projects on the science of substances at a science fair set for 6 p.m. March 23 at the Easton Volunteer Fire Department.

The clubs include students at Easton Middle School, Easton High School, and St. Michaels Middle School, who work on a variety of activities geared toward taking a stand against substance abuse. This project focuses on the science of substances and the effect on a teen brain. The final projects will debut at the science fair, which also will include local adolescent mental health and substance use disorder providers on hand for information and questions.

“We are pleased to see so many students engaged in learning the science behind the dangers of substance use and abuse, and sharing their knowledge with others,” said Dr. Rob Schmidt, TCPS Mental Health Coordinator.  “Our goal is to equip our students with meaningful knowledge to inform healthy choices and decisions, and help them lead by example among their peers. We also hope to provide parents an introduction to some of the excellent providers in our community.”

This science fair is one of several projects with Talbot Goes Purple across Talbot County Public Schools. Students this year also have participated in TGP’s daily educational messages and learned about prevention with Sterlen Barr, CEO of Rapping About Prevention (RAP), which delivers high-energy performances for grades 3-12 on topics including substance use prevention.

In October, TGP supported a school-wide poster contest for Red Ribbon Week. November saw elementary students collaborating on a gratitude mosaic and in December, students worked on ornaments that hung on the TGP Christmas Tree at the Talbot County Courthouse. And in February, students, teachers and administrators took part in Random Acts of Kindness Week, with notes of kindness spread around local schools.

Madison Elliott with TCPS is the TGP club advisor and liaison. All of TGP’s activities are sponsored by Spring & Associates. The student clubs are based upon the Herren Project, which includes evidence-informed prevention activities designed by clinicians and school counselors.

Talbot Goes Purple is a substance use prevention program geared toward helping kids stand up against substance abuse. Now in year six, TGP helps young people learn that they do not need substances to meet life’s challenges. Talbot Goes Purple includes school-based student clubs, outreach and education activities, and community engagement events.

An initiative of the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office and Tidewater Rotary, in partnership with Talbot County Public Schools, Saints Peter & Paul School and the Mid-Shore Community Foundation, Talbot Goes Purple empowers our youth and our community to ‘Go Purple’ as a sign of taking a stand against substance abuse.

Healthy Living Classes Begins March 2 in St. Michaels

The St. Michaels Community Center in partnership with the Talbot County Health Department is offering two classes promoting healthier living that are free and open to the public, with limited participation and preregistration needed.

Both six-week classes take place in small group settings at the St. Michaels Community Center at 207 N. Talbot St. and include a cooking demonstration that will show how to prepare healthy meals utilizing ingredients available from the pantry. Dinner will be provided to all participants.

The first class focuses on chronic disease self-management and takes place on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. beginning March 2 and continuing through April 6.

The workshop will provide tips and techniques for pain and fatigue management, dealing with depression, healthy eating and exercise, medication management, working with healthcare providers, goal setting, problem solving, and more.

Diabetes self-management is the focus of the second class and takes place on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. beginning March 22 and continuing through April 26.

This workshop will help adults with Type 2 diabetes or who are pre diabetic with management tips including defining diabetes, dealing with stress, appropriate exercise, carb-counting, addressing high and low blood sugar, healthy eating, menu planning, and more.

The Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence serves residents throughout the state of Maryland with a variety of evidence-based programs to improve self-management of chronic conditions along with wellness programs promoting health and preventing disease.

Donations to the St. Michaels Community Center’s annual fund and proceeds from its Treasure Cove Thrift Shop, located on Railroad Ave. in St. Michaels, help provide essential human services, programs, and community events for people in St. Michaels and from throughout Maryland’s Bay Hundred area. Choptank Health Promotes Pediatric Dental Health in February

Choptank Health is building awareness about the importance of pediatric dental health in recognition of February’s designation as National Children’s Dental Health Month and National School-Based Health Care Awareness Month.

National Children’s Dental Health Month is sponsored by the American Dental Association as a month-long health observance bringing together thousands of dedicated professionals, healthcare providers, and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers, and many others.

“Oral health is extremely important for children as a preventative tool,” said Choptank Community Health’s Chief Dental Officer Sandra Garbely-Kerkovich, DMD. “Evidence continues to mount connecting oral health to adult health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and more.

“When we can prevent any oral health problems from occurring in the first place and early on in a child’s life, we can help that child grow into an overall healthier adult,” says Dr. Garbely.

Choptank Health’s dental healthcare team includes two pediatric dentists that are trained and specialize in treating young patients. Hadeel Alhassani, DDS, and Usman Ali, DMD see pediatric patients at Choptank Health’s dental centers in Cambridge, Denton, Federalsburg, Goldsboro, and St. Michaels, with new pediatric dental patients now being accepted.

February is also recognized each year by the School-Based Health Alliance to help raise awareness about how school-based health centers revolutionize the way children and adolescents access healthcare services.

The Alliance says school-based health care is also a commonsense idea gaining currency across the country as it places critically needed services like medical, behavioral, dental, and vision care directly in schools so that all young people, no matter their zip code, have equal opportunity to learn and grow.

Dr. Garbely and Community Based Program Director Chrissy Bartz, PAC, MMS oversee the school-based dental program, with enrolled Pre-K through 12th-grade students enrolled in each school eligible to receive care at any location. Local Head Start and Judy Center students are also able to participate.

Registered dental hygienists at Choptank Health’s School-Based Health Centers and on-site mobile unit provide dental screenings, fluoride treatments, sealant applications, and dental hygiene education. The free dental screenings include examinations of the teeth and all soft tissues of the mouth—along with instruction on brushing and flossing, and education on the importance of eating healthy foods in good oral hygiene.

Dental services are provided to School-Based Health Center-enrolled students Dorchester County Public Schools, with dental and medical services available to students enrolled in the School-Based Health Centers of Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot County Public Schools.

Choptank Community Health System provides medical, dental, and School-Based health services to more than 30,000 adults and children in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot counties, with a mission to provide access to exceptional, comprehensive, and integrated healthcare for all. Medical services include primary healthcare, women’s health, pediatrics, behavioral health, chronic health management, care navigation, and more.
