The Claiborne-Annapolis Ferry Company ran both passenger and automobile ferry service across the Chesapeake Bay from 1919 to 1952. This pictured Gov. Albert C. Ritchie ferry was built in 1883 / 1884 and was 194 feet long. She was originally built for the West Shore and Ontario Terminal Company but in 1926 was modified as a double ender to carry 75-80 vehicles and 1200 passengers! The Gov. Albert C. Richie ferry was placed in service on the Chesapeake Bay July 22, 1926 and was condemned and scrapped in 1945! Facts: Wikipedia Claiborne -Annapolis Ferry Company. Reminds me of the ferry my father took across the Hudson river from Hoboken, New Jersey, to Manhattan, New York. I remember it as being HUGE but I was little. There were passenger ferries and car ferries (not sure if the car ferries also had passengers). It was a big treat to go to NYC on the ferry!!

I know; I know; “studies show” ferry service would not be as efficient as another bridge. But wouldn’t it be delightful?
