The Nevius Hardware building on the corner of Washington and Goldsborough Streets was constructed as a hotel in 1866 by George Haddaway. In 1897 the building was remodeled by Nevius and Frampton, Inc. as a hardware store. Simon Nevius and his sons Carl and Ronald ran the store starting in 1899 until it’s closing. On August 8, 1950 this fire damaged the roof but it was repaired and remained Nevius Hardware until sometime in the 1970’s? Do you remember the year it closed? What business then moved there? This was an extraordinary store, the salesmen wore bow-ties, they were polite, helpful, knowledgeable, and could find anything you might need among the incredible inventory in a flash. The shelves, drawers, cupboards and floors were wood, a visit was a walk back in time but completely useful. Believe it was the late 70’s, if not later, that it closed sadly. One of my best memories of the shore. Last year Bay Star had a wooden armoire for sale which was cited as a piece that came from the upstairs of the store, dating many years ago, when there were rooms to let (a hotel?). Coffee East might have been the next venture there but no doubt someone else will remember more. Thanks for sharing.
