This Talbot Historical Society H. Robins Hollyday Collection photo is featured on page 93 of Norman Harrington’s “Easton Album” 1986. The caption reads” Braca School, Miles River Neck ,near Easton, in the 1880’s. The school was typical of the thirty-five or more one-room schools that served rural areas of Talbot County in the days before school buses or acceptable roads. Travel was by horseback or on foot. It was not unusual for pupils to walk several miles to and from school each day.” Contact:

Having moved here from a village in Vermont, it somehow escaped me that there were one-room schoolhouses in other parts of the country…so thank you for sharing this photo! I volunteered at the preserved schoolhouse in my village, so I’m wondering: do any of the Talbot County one-room schools still exist?
