We are so excited to find this photo while scanning in Hollyday archive box F1 this past weekend. This Schooner rig was adopted in America soon after 1700 though its sail plan had been evolving in Europe for a century before. After the centerboard arrived in Baycraft in 1820 the beautiful schooner was more prevalent on the Chesapeake Bay with it’s shallow shoals. Facts: “Chesapeake Sailing Craft” by M. V. Brewington 1966, CBMM.
This H. Robins Hollyday Collection photo of a converted schooner was taken in the 1950’s. Contact: Cathy Hill [email protected] to share your old photos. Comment, Like our page and join THS!
